Representative Sheila Jackson-Lee (Demagogue-Houston), has asked Governor Rick Perry to "disinvite" the Minuteman Project from the state of Texas.
"I urge the governor to disinvite the Minuteman Project. Ask them not to come here," Jackson Lee said Sunday. The group has posted volunteers in Arizona to alert authorities to illegal immigrants crossing the border.
Organizers have expressed an interest in recruiting in Texas and beginning patrols along the Rio Grande in October.
Given that the governor did not invite the Minutemen, and given that any American citizen has the right to travel, visit, or reside anywhere in this country that they please, i don't particularly see where it is the governor's place to "disinvite" the group.
However, if "disinvitations" are to be issued, I'd like to suggest that Rick Perry extend one to Queen Sheila. She is an embarassment to the state of Texas, and the further away she stays from here the better.
Comments on Better Yet, Disinvite Her!
The thing is (as I've stated before), some of the strongest criticism of illegal immigration has come from minority-Americans, because - as many studies have proven - it is they who are the most adversely affected by this problem.
Let's not "pit blacks against Hispanics" is what Jackson-Lee has said in the past, in her refusal to take a strong stance against illegal immigration. The thing is, many have compared Congresswoman Jackson-Lee to the renowned Barbara Jordan, another very liberal black Democrat who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas; I recall during the Clinton impeachment situation, hearing that she could be "the next Barbara Jordan." But as long as she maintains this stance, she won't be like Ms. Jordan. Barbara Jordan was a liberal Democrat, but she recognized when a policy was hurting her nation. President Clinton - though he didn't do much to solve this problem - did talk tough on immigration. He appointed a bi-partisan commission to study this issue, and former Congresswoman Jordan was the Chair of it. The recommendations from the Jordan Commission were great, and even President Clinton endorsed them. However, legislation based upon was defeated by pandering Democrats (i.e. - ethnic lobbies) and by pandering Republicans (i.e. - corporate lobbies).
At the recent CLP Conference, I brought out the issue of illegal immigration's impact on minorities, during the Q-and-A session following Michelle Malkin's speech. If you look at our comments in that discussion thread at Flynn Files, you can see that we're also talking not only about Barbara Jordan, but also about another liberal icon - Cesar Chavez. The great Latino labor leader was also a strong opponent of illegal immigration, and even sent his people to the border to assist the INS in combatting this problem. I am glad that the WMU College Republicans were aware of that (Matt Hall responded to my comment, in that thread) before their Pat Buchanan event. I recently found this excellent blog entry about this. So it seems that in the past, liberals (including minority-American leaders, such as Barbara Jordan and Cesar Chavez) have been at the forefront of the opposition to illegal immigration.
Some leftists are still pressing this issue, and as I was saying earlier today, the Democrats would be doing better if they were to make this one of their issues again.
With respect to the issue of Congresswoman Lee and the immigration issue, I also want to point you to this article from a few years ago by the President of Black Electorate Communications.
Thanks, and keep up the good work at this site.
