North Korean Missile Tests

Well, the total number of missiles fired by the North Koreans appears to be seven.

All the missiles landed in the Sea of Japan.

North Korea test-fired a seventh missile Wednesday -- amid international furor over the regime's launch of six missiles just hours earlier.

The Japanese Defense Agency said one ballistic missile was fired from southeastern North Korea around 5:20 p.m. (4:20 a.m. ET), landing in the Sea of Japan about 10 minutes later.

The range of the missile has not been confirmed by CNN. However, Japanese news agencies said it was medium-range.

The seventh test came after North Korea launched one long-range and five shorter-range missiles shortly after 3:30 a.m. Wednesday (2:30 p.m. Tuesday ET). Those tests lasted about five hours.

But the closely-watched Taepodong-2 missile, which some analysts say is capable of hitting the western United States, failed after about 40 seconds and landed in the sea about 200 miles (321 kilometers) west of Japan, U.S. officials said.

So what we have here is a failed missile test of the Tapeodong-2, but successful tests of the short and medium range missiles. It is clear that the tests of the more limited range weapons were intended to serve as a warning to the US and its allies that the North Koreans can do significant damage in Asia, even if they lack the capacity to reach the United States.

Captain's Quarters notes that the Taepodong-2 fell into the sea off Hokkaido 42 seconds after launch. This indicates a polar course designed to send teh missile towards Alaska -- a provocation of the first order, coming as it did on the Independence Day. Were we prepared to shoot it out of the sky? Were we prepared to retaliate had the missile continued further along that trajectory?

Clearly, this test shows that the North Koreas are still some way from deploying the Taepodong-2 -- and that concerted efforts by the United States and the international community must be taken to prevent the North Koreans from doing so.

UPDATE: The UN Security Council is meeting this morning.

The United Nations Security Council met in emergency session this morning to respond to North Korea's test-firing of seven missiles, as Japan and South Korea imposed economic penalties and nations around the world denounced the launchings.

The American ambassador to the United Nations, John R. Bolton, said as he arrived for the meeting that he hoped for "a strong and unanimous signal from the council that this kind of behavior is unacceptable."

And we all know how effective that will be, given in bringing Saddam Hussein to heel in Iraq.

Comments on North Korean Missile Tests

Powell and Rice were quoted during world tours throughout 2001...until 9/11, assuring all interested parties that Saddam was "contained and in a box". Are you calling them liars or incompetents? (Of course these were among the last of the honest Bush coterie statements which dissolved in a sea of lies post 9/11.)

|| Posted by Ken Hoop, July 5, 2006 02:42 PM ||

Let me guess, Ken -- you are one of those who believes that Bush ordered the destruction of the WTC.

On the order of the evil JOOOOOOOS, no doubt.

|| Posted by Rhymes With Right, July 5, 2006 04:48 PM ||

The failure of you,and Bush regime, to answer the first question,and explain the "modification" of assessment of Saddam's capabilities, leads inexorably to proper ,well-founded ,suspicions of the government

|| Posted by Ken Hoop, July 6, 2006 12:02 PM ||

You mean little ol' me is now teh spokesman for the US government?

|| Posted by Rhymes With Right, July 6, 2006 12:25 PM ||

Focus,rhymer. You're the one who explicitly buys the neocon/Bush regime distortion which ultimately claimed the UN had not sufficiently brought Saddam "to heel",contradicting its own pre 9/11 assertions as outlined above. If you buy
one set of contradictions which led directly to a war you still support, you have some 'splainin' to do. Or volunteer to fight w/o reconciling the lies--I'll accept that minimal act as an existentialist leap of faith on your part.

|| Posted by Ken Hoop, July 6, 2006 01:54 PM ||

There you go again, using a code-word for JOOOOOOOOS.

|| Posted by Rhymes With Right, July 6, 2006 02:57 PM ||

Have you figured out yet that I don't bother carrying on rational discussions with anti-Semites or other bigots, Ken?

|| Posted by Rhymes With Right, July 6, 2006 02:58 PM ||

In othere words, Ken, it really is all about the JOOOOOOOOOOOS!

Can't you take the hint that I want your anti-Semitic, holocaust-denying ass off my site?

|| Posted by Rhymes With Right, July 6, 2006 06:12 PM ||

http://www.rense.com/general72/silence.htm

Can't you take the hint that,as Rep Paul Findlay infers, you're a dupe (or a malevolent fellow traveler thereof) of an organized lobby, and as I infer, someone who takes more visceral offense at revisionism applied to political controversy than secular denial of your own purported religious faith?

|| Posted by Ken Hoop, July 8, 2006 09:54 AM ||

The Holocaust is a political controversy?

Sorry, you anti-Semitic, Holocaust-denying, neo-Nazi Skinhead bastard, you just discreditted yourself completely.

As for Findley, WHOSE BOOK I OWN AND HAVE READ IN TWO EDITIONS, I think he has some points about the pro-Israel lobby (which I sometimes find myself in disagreement with because Israeli and American interests are not always identical) he has long-since gone round the bend into an anti-Zionism that approaches anti-Semitism (much like Pat Buchanan). To the degree that he demonizes those who engage in legitimate First Amendment activities, he crosses into unAmericanism.

|| Posted by Rhymes With Right, July 8, 2006 06:39 PM ||

So Ken, since Findley's email address is at the end of his article, why don't you spend some time corresponding with him about the evil of the JOOOOOOOOS (who you refer to as my "masters" in a private email) rather than bohering me with your anti-Semitic, Holocaust-denying, neo-Nazi Skinhead, Muslim-Ass-Kissing bullshit.

|| Posted by Rhymes With Right, July 8, 2006 06:41 PM ||

It would be far more meritorious to amplify on what you believe constitutes "going round the bend" & "demonization" of those who would lead us into a suicidal, regionally destabilizing conflagration to strengthen Israel's position in the Mideast and let your readers decide if Findlay
acts with due alacrity. As Buchanan, for example when he defended Denjanjuk, called into question the broad phenomenon of memories of survivors of (the continent-wide catastrophe,) I suppose I'm in good company with those you consider en masse beyond the pale.

|| Posted by Ken Hoop, July 10, 2006 02:07 PM ||

Better still would be your permanent departure from this site, taking your pathological hatered of JOOOOOOOOOS with you.

|| Posted by Rhymes With Right, July 10, 2006 06:16 PM ||

Please refer me to one posted comment from you which reflects favorably on Arabs or Moslems anywhere in the world, excepting ones you might have bestowed on a unrepresentative miniscule fraction because of explicit pro-American or pro-Israeli stances. If you cannot, as I can present a multitude of your negative comments ,I have no choice but to conclude you have a pathological hatred for these groupings.

|| Posted by Ken Hoop, July 11, 2006 08:36 AM ||

Actually, I can include a number of students and all but one of my wife's physicians in the group of Muslims who I love &/or respect -- including the one who is directly responsible for her continuing to be a live Every one of them is either Muslim or Arab or both.

And I'm not going to spend the time looking for the posts in which I've said that most Muslims are decent people. You are not worth it. Look for them yourself.

|| Posted by Rhymes With Right, July 11, 2006 08:00 PM ||

If true I stand admonished but only in part.

Your stand on Israeli-Palestinian issues is one opposed,often as racist and/or as excusing Zionist racism by the vast majority of Arabs, Arab-Americans and Arabs attending institutes of higher learning in America.Ditto regards the Iraq War. This of course does not prove you
are guilty of any of this only that Americans who hold your views are commonly believed,by decided majorities of these ethnic groups, to be guilty of very similar charges which you easily toss around.

|| Posted by Ken Hoop, July 12, 2006 10:32 AM ||

I don't give a damn what they think -- they are wrong, and their error gives support to terrorists.
