Who Knows More About Iraq?

Abazid or Mutha? Come on, I'm serious -- which one should we be listening to, the commanding general on the ground who believes we can win or an old corrupt congressman who wants to surrender?

The top American military commander for the Middle East said Wednesday that to begin a significant troop withdrawal from Iraq over the next six months would lead to an increase in sectarian killings and hamper efforts to persuade the Iraqi government to make the difficult decisions needed to secure the country.

The commander, Gen. John P. Abizaid, made it clear that he did not endorse the phased troop withdrawals being proposed by Democratic lawmakers. Instead, he said the number of troops in Iraq might be increased by a small amount as part of new plans by American commanders to improve the training of the Iraqi Army.

And yes, I recognize that he criticized the Bush Administration for not sending more troops earlier. I agree with him. But the solution isn't to cut and run now.

More from Captain Ed.

Yeah, Groggy, and you can search the history files of a war which evidently taught you little....and find a score of generals in the Vietnam theater who expressed all manner of both willful distortions and honestly misguided mistaken judgements. All of which helped lead to several more years of unnecessary US blood lost in a losing cause.

Of course, the NVs concede that we had won the war on the ground -- but they got the anti-war crowd to give them victory on the US home front.

I'd argue that the situation is playing out again in Iraq.

Yeah, as a kid I also believed that knee-jerk "conventional right wing" propaganda about the Vietnam War . But you know better. The simple truth is, the US would still be there propping up an unpopular government, killing more of them than they of us, but with a pervasive rebellion that would bankrupt the treasury and demoralize the military, (those who weren't already on drugs, as was commonplace in Vietnam.)

Damn that Gen. Giap -- knee-jerk right-winger that he was -- for putting such an assessment of the military situation in his memoirs of his time as head of the NV Army.

I believe you had harsh words for Bush critics earlier on, calling them traitors or similar.At any rate more soldiers would have meant more targets,not victory,which is and was impossible.

And I reaffirm my position today.

|| Posted by Rhymes With Right, November 18, 2006 01:42 PM ||

Disagreement on how to fight the jihadis is not treason -- disagreement with fighting the jihadis is.

|| Posted by Rhymes With Right, November 18, 2006 01:43 PM ||

Disagreement with fighting any (actual) jihad activity ON OUR SOIL could be construed as treason--and that is all.

|| Posted by Ken Hoop, November 19, 2006 07:37 PM ||

KKKen -- you must have missed 9/11 and the first WTC attack. We need to seek out and destroy the jihadis wherever they are.

Those who frustrate taht activity should be treated like leaders and members of the German American Bund.
