I am a diabetic. I'm regularly told that my condition could be cured by means of fetal stem cell research. So let me express my opinion clearly on President Bush's veto of the bill giving federal funding for such research.
GOOD FOR YOU, MR. PRESIDENT!
President Bush yesterday vetoed legislation to expand federally funded embryonic stem cell research, saying that scientific advances now allow researchers to pursue the potentially lifesaving work without destroying human embryos.Bush followed his veto -- his third since becoming president -- with an executive order aimed at encouraging federal agencies to support research that offers the promise of creating medically useful stem cells without destroying human embryos.
This story, however, overlooks the more basic point -- nothing in current law makes it illegal to do research on fetal stem cells. There are a number of approved stem cell lines that can still be funded, and there is absolutely nothing to prohibit any fetal stem cell research using private money. What this veto does is simply prohibit the use of federal money to facilitate the taking of any more innocent lives for scientific research.
There are some points to consider -- some practical, some moral.
1) If fetal stem cell research is so promising, why isn't private industry funding it to the level that these breakthroughs will be made quickly. After all, a cure for diabetes of Parkinsons would be immensely profitable. Could it be that Big Pharmaceutical (the drug equivalent of Big Oil) is so unsure of the potential that it won't put up the money for research -- or that it simply feels that federal subsidies are its right?
2) Large numbers of Americans have moral objections to the methods for obtaining fetal stem cells. Is it appropriate to take their money to fund something that offends their values at such a fundamental level? Do their values and policy preferences matter less than those of researchers and (some of) those with medical conditions that could be cured by such research -- and why?
So I applaud the stand by the president in this case. Just because Dr. Mengele some research scientists seek government funding to destroy Jewish prisoners in a concentration camp embryos n a laboratory does not means that government should facilitate such work -- or that it is morally acceptable if they get such funding.

Thank you for covering the issue so well. I only wish more folks would take the time to separate the issue at each level, emotional, scientific and religious.

I, too have diabetes and support federally funded stem cell research. Big Drugs DON'T WANT TO CURE diseases like ours. There's too much profit in treating and managing it. Why would they want to cure their cash cows?
If Bush truly believed destroying any human embryos is immoral and "taking innocent life" then he and those who agree should support the outlawing of the creation of these embryos in the first place. Or at least force the implantation of all embryos created so they can become the humans they have the potential to be. (Unlike you and me who are already real humans, not just potential ones.)
Unless, of course, you believe like the President ant I that those embryos are, in fact, real human beings from the moment of conception.
And the answer to your question about implantation and creation of the embryos is very simple -- both of your proposals are impossible under the abomination known as Roe v. Wade. Couples may create and destroy children prior to birth more or less at will, free from government limit -- but there is no requirement that government pay for any of it. So you can have as many embryos created as you want, turn them all over to researchers, and they can kill them all in the name of "science" if you choose. The only thing the President's veto impacts is who will pay for that research.

Moron, under Bush's veto it is illegal for these IVF embryos to be transferred to science. Has nothing to do with money - but then again, you seem like the same type of callous asshole who would rather see people die than pay one more penny toward anything that would help others.
Your self-proclaimed "morality" about this issue is nothing more than personal selfishness. If you are so opposed to further research - and the monies required to do it properly - go live somewhere where all of this anethema, like, maybe, Iran or Pakistan.
Nobody needs your hollow, destructive moral high-mindedness here. Think about someone other than yourself for a change.
|| Posted by Stiffs2, June 22, 2007 09:21 AM ||1) You are wrong, LimpDick2. All this does is deal with federal funding of the research, not the research itself. Go get educated on the matter and quit showing your ignorance.
2) Notice, LimpDick2, that I am one of the folks that this research would allegedly benefit, and that I oppose it despite the fact that the illness from which I suffer will likely be either the direct or indirect cause of my death -- and will probably cripple and/or blind me before then. If i were thinking about myself, I would be demanding that the entire frigging federal budget would be devoted to this research. But I'm not -- I am looking at the bigger issue here, one that says that you don't take innocent life for scientific research. But I'm willing to bet, LimpDick2, that you are opposed to the death penalty for murderers and rapists -- since we are talking about "hollow, destructive moral high-mindedness".
