At least according to Congressman Tom Lantos.
Lantos asked Yahoo Chief Executive Officer Jerry Yang and Senior Vice President and General Counsel Michael Callahan to appear November 6."Our committee has established that Yahoo provided false information to Congress in early 2006," Lantos said in a written statement. "We want to clarify how that happened, and to hold the company to account for its actions both before and after its testimony proved untrue. And we want to examine what steps the company has taken since then to protect the privacy rights of its users in China."
* * * "We have now learned there is much more to the story than Yahoo let on, and a Chinese government document that Yahoo had in their possession at the time of the hearing left little doubt of the government's intentions," said Republican Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey.
"U.S. companies must hold the line and not work hand in glove with the secret police."
In other words, Yahoo was more than willing to give up information about a user to allow the Chinese government to suppress legitimate speech.
The time has come to ensure that American companies do not become cooperators in oppression.

It's no surprise that internet purveyors of information are now caught up in a treacherous legal tangle on an international scale after President Bush's precious Patriot and Military Acts gave him power to demand handover of identity info of third party information and communication content. The nation demanded action after 9/11, but it got a lot more than than bargained for when 800 year old democratic protectorates like habeas corpus and others are, defacto, overturned. No wonder Yahoo gave out that information. IM and email providers now don't know what to do when ANY government, foreign or national, demands the records of someone else, in the case, that unfortunate Chinese dissident. Therefor, don't blame Yahoo, blame President Bush and his neoconservative cronies in Washington. And you realize what this all means? I'll tell you, America is not the shining democracy it once was. We have sold our inalienable rights, the legacy of hundreds and hundreds of years of socio-political evolution, for a proverbial bowl of 'pottage'we prefer to call "security." That's the rub though, by this very action we become insecure in our own quarters. Nice job all alienated and disaffected voters. Your Congress, who you voted to protect your birthrights, just gave them away to preserve their seat.
