Freedom For The Speech We Hate

I despise racist organizations and individuals -- those who are truly racist, not ones that are simply slapped with the label when a group or candidate seeks to preempt discussion by playing the race card. As such, I carry no brief for the KKK, historically the paramilitary terrorist wing of the Democrats and the enemy of all that the GOP stands for.

But when I see an article like this one, I feel a need to remind folks that racist speech does have the protection of the US Constitution, as disgusted as we might be by it.

Take this case.

Commuters found fliers with the image of a white-hooded horseman holding a blazing cross placed on the windshields of hundreds of cars parked at a Long Island Rail Road station.

The fliers were printed with messages such as "Join the Klan and save our land" and "We are of the United Northern & Southern Knights of the Ku Klux Klan are unapologetically committed to the interest and values of the white race!"

Suffolk County police are investigating who may have left the fliers, but says it's possible that no crime was committed. They say the dissemination of the fliers at the Deer Park station Tuesday could be regarding as an act of free expression.

It is that last paragraph that sticks in my craw -- "could be regarded as an act of free expression"? Seems to me that the correct position is should be regarded as an act of free expression, if not "must be regarded as an act of free expression. After all, the First Amendment is meaningless if it only protects the inoffensive and non-controversial.

Oh, and for the record -- those involved in this little effort are nothing but scum.

The KKK is the paramilitary terrorist wing of the Democrats???????????

Wow....I've seen some really stupid things lately...but that takes the prize!

Study your history, asshole. The KK is an organization that has its roots in the Democrat Party, which controlled the Democrat Party in much of this country, and which was embraced by the Democrat Party for the better part of a century. Indeed, one old Kluxer sits in the US Senate today -- and he proudly displays a D after his name.

The GOP has always rejected the KKK -- the Democrats have a historical relationship with those scumbags dating back to the organization's very beginning. Hence my statement about those historical ties.

I truly feel sorry for your students...they are being cheated out of an education.

You must be one of those people that state that Obama is a Muslim...but also a long time member of a radical african-america christian church.

When you shithead fascists try to fling crap to see if it sticks...you should at least try to be consistent.

Now that is a riot, asswipe. I state historical truth, and you claim that my students are being cheated out of an education? It is beyond dispute that the KKK is historically an organization tied to the Democrat Party -- and that the targets of these Democrats in good standing were blacks, Republicans, Jews, and (sometimes) Catholics.

It is also beyond dispute that Robert Byrd of West Virginia was an organizer for the KKK.

As far as Obama being a Muslim, go back and read what I wrote on the matter -- while there is legitimate reason to believe that Obama may have had at least some Muslim upbringing (dad and stepdad were both Muslim, and he was enrolled in school as a Muslim in Indonesia), there is no reason to dispute that he at some point joined Trinity UCC (my wife is a former pastor in that same denomination -- there is a wide variety of teaching in the UCC) -- and that he accepted at least some of the radical teachings of its racist pastor, Jeremiah Wright.

But even though I have noted those things, it does not matter for my students -- I don't engage in partisan activity in my class, and my students do not even know who I am voting for. Right now they are about evenly split between thinking I'm voting McCain, voting Obama, or unsure about who i support. They do know, however, that my wife and I are members of opposite political parties, so we will cancel out the other's vote.

Now I ask you, Cardinal -- what historical facts have I gotten wrong in this post, or in the above comments? Be specific, and be sure to document your claims and show where I am actually wrong, not merely interpreting the available facts differently than you are.

Oh, by the way -- how does my ringing defense of free speech for those whose beliefs I despise qualify me as a fascist? Seems to me that my words above disprove your claim, you moron. Seems to me that you are the one flinging shit to see what sticks.
