Sad News For Obama -- And An Observation

I, along with all people of goodwill, offer my sincere condolences to Barack Obama upon hearing this sad news.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's grandmother died of cancer, he said in a statement on Monday, a little more than a week after he interrupted the White House campaign to say goodbye to her in Hawaii.

"It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer," Obama said in a joint statement with his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng. "She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength and humility."

Dunham, 86, helped raise Obama from the age of 10 while his mother was working in Indonesia, and Obama took an emotional 22-hour trip to Hawaii to visit her on October 23 and 24.

I lost my dear grandmother four years ago, shortly after starting my blog. I still grieve. We lost my mother-in-law this spring, and that loss remains very fresh with both my wife and I. I can therefore feel nothing but compassion for a candidate who I unashamedly reject as unfit for office, but in whom I recognize our common humanity. May he and his family know God's comfort at this time.

But let me make a small observation about this story, and what we will not see in its wake.

We will not see any conservative or Republican website of any import suggest that Madelyn Dunham died of anything other than natural causes. In particular, we will not find any bloggers for national publications suggesting that Mrs. Dunham's death was staged by or assisted by the Obama campaign for her grandson's political advantage. Indeed, his loss will be treated with the respect it deserves.

Contrast that with the continued conspiracy theories of the Left regarding Sarah palin's most recent pregnancy and whether or not she is the mother of her youngest child, Trig. Nor will any comedy show suggest that Michelle Obama secretly did the old woman in, as SNL suggested that Todd Palin was the actual father of Bristol Palin's unborn child.

But then again, decency is a staple of the Right -- it is notoriously lacking on the Left.

Hmmm. Decency is a staple of the right, huh? Well, my mother in law lives in Indiana, and the right wing has flooded Indiana with the most abominable material - through the MAIL yet!- about Obama. Including doubts about his citizenship (interesting, since McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone, and Obama was born in Hawaii-), despite his birth certificate. She has burned most of the worst stuff, but I asked her to keep anything that comes through the US Mail in the last few days...how Obama "hangs around with terrorists", all sorts of ludicrous nonsense -mostly to scare people they think are uneducated enough to buy it. It'll be good for her grandchildren to see just how low the right sank, at least where they figured they wouldn't be seen - out in "fly over country". Too bad for them this woman has a master's degree and is smart enough to see through all the garbage.

Decency. Hmmm. Guess it depends on your definition....

It's people like you that make me hate the Internet.

I too find the comment of "decency is a staple of the Right" hard to swallow.  But I also understand that they are able to deceive the followers.  Peace to you.

You're kidding, right??? You want links to some examples of the right's "decency"?

the delusion, it burns...

Amazing, isn't it, how negative campaigning is by definition when Republicans speak truthfully about a less-than-glamorous aspect of a candidate's campaign or affiliations. And look at the spin that's turned "swiftboating" into a taboo verb! Evidently, we Republicans should only say positive things, whether or not they're true.

Rhymes with Right - FRIGHT You Are!!

I see from your "About Me" profile that you are a Social Studies teacher in Texas. I feel sorry for your students!

"Nor will any comedy show suggest that Michelle Obama secretly did the old woman in, as SNL suggested that Todd Palin was the actual father of Bristol Palin's unborn child."

Wow! Michelle Obama doing her mother-in-law in? If this is the thought process that goes through your mind, I don't even want to imagine what you are suggesting to your students. Perhaps you have seen "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" one too many times.

I would say decency is lacking on both sides, and I am sick and tired of holier than thou republicans thinking they can do no wrong, and spouting off how they can. I am a Republican, and this behavior just turns my stomach.
Also, there is nothing indecent about an 86 year-old woman battling cancer dying. If the 'Right's' refraining from insinuating that Obama murdered his grandmother to boost his already high ratings is your definition of decency, you're cracked, and you need to shut up before you do the GOP any more damage.

This is totally unappropriate and uncalled for. For all concerned, everybody, it is time to "GROW UP"!!! No wonder the country is in a "TURMOIL".

GET A GRIP!!!

-Sarah Palin charging rape victims for their own rape kits.

-Mark Foley and his underage male page.

-The Larry Craig bathroom incident.

etc. etc. etc.

All good examples of the right's monopoly on decency.

Too bad you libs don't get the point -- that was a parody of all the conspiracy theories you liberals have been offering about Bush for eight years, not support for any of those absurd ideas. Get a clue.

The voters of America the beautiful have spoken, loud and clear and quickly enough to define the outcome before bedtime pacific time.
Decency is what filled my e mail box with lying, stupid unvetted utube videos about Obama being arab, muslim, sworn in on the koran etc etc on and on ad nauseum? HHHmmmmmm, I could have sworn those all came from hysterical, psudeo christian, holier than thou right wingers!
