Gas Prices Soar – Thanks, Barry!

I filled up my gas tank last night, here in the Houston area. Even though I was at a station located so close to the refinery that I could have hit an oil storage tank with a well-thrown rock, the gasoline cost over $3.00 a gallon. I’m glad I did, though. The cost of a gallon of gas had increased by 5% -- over 15¢ a gallon – in a mere 15 hours, which would have cost me over $2.00 more to fill the tank. Since the first of the year, the rise has been such that I am paying about $10.00 more to fill my tank – a pretty sharp increase that is tearing a big hole in my budget.

Now I had been prepared to write a pretty hostile rant about Barack Obama and his failed energy policies. I had even started the project. But then it hit me – Obama’s energy policy has not failed. No, seriously. I’d argue that Obama’s energy policies have succeeded wildly – and in doing so are sticking it to the consumers of energy and discouraging the use of fossil fuels.

Think about it. During the 2008 presidential election, Obama talked about cutting consumption rather than expanding supply when it came to gasoline. He’s certainly accomplished that in spades. Rather than permit drilling in ANWR, he has reinstituted the ban in that area. He’s removed much of the coastal waters from consideration as drilling site. Following the Gulf disaster, he has illegally instituted a moratorium on drilling and flouted the law by ignoring multiple court decrees directing his administration to approve the permits necessary to allow for drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. He has opposed other efforts that would allow for America to gain energy independence while using our own national resources. The result? Higher prices that cannot help but continue because we have not increased supply so as to meet the demand. And since that is the natural outcome of such policies, and thoroughly predictable at that, I am forced to conclude that Obama (who is, one would presume, a was an intelligent and educated man) wanted these results.

So forget complying with court orders. Forget drilling in ANWR. Forget drilling off-shore in areas that are currently closed – even if that means allowing enough oil to make us energy independent to go untapped. Just cough up the cash every time Obama’s policies result in higher gas prices.

And don’t you dare oppose that flawed policy that will bring on another economic decline during Obama’s Great Dem-Pression. Because after all, dissent from Obamunism is the rankest form of racism.

Hey Greg! Great post! I hadn't thought of the reason for rising gas prices that way but I believe you're right, Obama's energy policy is working just right. The Anointed One wants to make gasoline so expensive that Americans will not only significantly reduce their driving, but they'll cry out for green energy as the solution to soaring fossil fuel prices. Obama is working to make his envisioned socialist utopia a reality. We've got to stop him.

I've got it a little worse -- with a diesel truck, I'm paying around $3.50 a gallon. I find it curious that when crude was $140 a barrel a couple of years ago I never paid more than $3 a gallon, but now crude hasn't even topped $100 a barrel and I'm up to $3.50.

Seane-Anna, the president better hope there's no widespread clamoring for green energy solutions, because there aren't any practical green energy solutions. There is, however, always the option of returning to a hunter-gatherer lifestyle.

Petty person more concerned with filling up his truck than fate of the country or the plight of people elsewhere.

Actually, we are concerned about the plight of the country. That's why we are working to make the failed incumbent in the Oval Office a One Term president.

I think the "petty person" commentor begged the question in the classic liberal style. The higher energy costs do not save our country or improve the plight of people elsewhere. I have to assume you had a second helping of red herring for dinner last night.

If we don't get energy costs down or if worse they continue to rise we will indeed force our country into an even deeper recession.
