An 11-year-old Christian girl has been arrested in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad on a charge of blasphemy after she was accused of burning pages of the Quran, police said today.
Officials of Ramna police station said a First Information Report (FIR) had been registered against Rimsha Masih, a resident of Umara Jaffar in Sector G-12 in Islamabad.
The girl was arrested on Friday by personnel from a women's police station after a man named Syed Muhammad Ummad filed a complaint against her.
However, an NGO named 'Christians in Pakistan' reported on its website that the girl has 'Down Syndrome' and had been falsely accused of burning 10 pages of the Quran.
This is a child -- and one with a diminished mental capacity at that. What sort of society arrests and charges one such as this with a crime that carries a sentence of life imprisonment -- or even death -- for what amounts to nothing more than burning a few sheets of paper? What sort of religion demands such a thing?
What's more, as a Christian the Quran is not something she holds sacred, but is instead a book which expressly contradicts the teachings of her faith. In a civilized country among civilized people, it would therefore be understood that she would hold the Quran in lower esteem and respect than a Muslim does -- and that no government ought to be forcing her to abide by the teachings and practices of a different faith.
Especially when one considers that the teachings of Islam found in the Quran are blasphemous lies to a Christian -- and the lack of respect for Christians taught by Islam.
