The Wisdom Of Clint Eastwood

I didn’t watch the speeches at last night’s convention – I was instead watching my Houston Texans beat the Minnesota Vikings from my seat at Reliant Stadium, since someone with the NFL saw fit to schedule a game in one of the most Republican metropolitan areas in one of the most Republican states in the union on the final night of the Republican National Convention. And while I got to listen to Mitt Romney’s speech while driving home, I called it a night when I got home because I knew I had lunchroom duty at 6:45 AM and a classroom full of kids to teach thirty minutes later.

But fortunately, someone sent me a link to a piece over at Q and O that pointed me to the single most important thing that Clint Eastwood had to say in his speech/performance last night.

I would just like to say something, ladies and gentlemen. Something that I think is very important. It is that, you, we -- we own this country.

(APPLAUSE)

We -- we own it. It is not you owning it, and not politicians owning it. Politicians are employees of ours.

(APPLAUSE)

And -- so -- they are just going to come around and beg for votes every few years. It is the same old deal. But I just think it is important that you realize , that you're the best in the world. Whether you are a Democrat or Republican or whether you're libertarian or whatever, you are the best. And we should not ever forget that. And when somebody does not do the job, we got to let them go.

He’s right, you know.

We own this country – all of us, together.

It does not belong to the political class in Washington, patrician families in Hyannisport, pampered movie stars in Hollywood, or elite journalists in Chevy Chase Village. America and its promise belong to all of us, and those to whom we entrust the levers of power work for us, not the other way around. It is why it is so appropriate that the opening words of the Constitution are writ large in that ornate script – We the People

constitution_1_of_4_630[1].jpg

Everything that follows in that document has but one purpose – to give instructions to our employees on how to operate the machinery of government and to place certain powers and functions off limits to them. And yet today we hear many of those same employees tell us that the instruction manual is no longer important and the changes they have made over the years are a better way – and that if we just let them use some of those prohibited functions and powers they will really make things so much better. We the people have all too often stood by and allowed them to violate the operating parameters, and all too often we have found that whatever short-term good may have been done comes with long term consequences that are detrimental to our national health and our individual liberties.

We own this country – and it is our obligation to wisely choose stewards to act on our behalf. We own this country – and at times it is important that we fire an employee who is not up to the job he has been handed or who has indicated his contempt for our authority over him. We own this country – and if the results we want are not forthcoming, it is time to make a change. And let there be no mistake – the results of the Obama Presidency are clearly not what we were promised, not what we were led to expect, and not what we should accept.

In 2008, Barack Obama campaigned – and won – on a promise of change. It is therefore perfectly within our rights for We the People to decide that change is what we want in 2012. Thank you to Mr. Eastwood for reminding us of that at this auspicious moment.
