Dems Say Vets Should Take Pay Cuts, Not Illegal Aliens – Or Members Of Congress

One of the many problems with the Ryan-Murray budget deal that has been rammed down the throats of the country in record time is that it imposes another broken promise on our nation’s veterans by cutting their retirement pay. Now I might be OK with that if it was truly a “shared sacrifice” across the board, but it isn’t. As George Orwell might say, certain animals are more equal than others under the proposal – and the Democrats have acted to make sure that it stays that way.

Just ask Senator Charles Schumer.

Civilian federal employees have been cut, cut, cut. I think there was a feeling, if you’re going to cut them further, which was done, that the military retirees should have about an equal amount. It’s small,” the New York Democrat told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.

* * *

But Schumer maintained members of Congress should not be forced to take a pay cut. He said they have already sacrificed, since they have not seen a pay raise “in a long time,” and explained most of them are paying more for healthcare insurance.

“We have taken pretty big cuts,” he said.

Yeah, because after all, that one percent drop in the cost of living increase for veterans – including those who have been left disabled by their combat wounds – will halt the rapid inflation of the overly generous pension of these military retirees. Why, these former soldiers and sailors are averaging nearly $10,000 a year in retirement benefits, whereas the impoverished members of the House and Senate make a mere $174,000. Oh, the humanity!

But that isn’t the only thing Democrats refuse to consider changing to allow our veterans to draw their full retirement – they voted to make sure that illegal aliens continue to illegally draw welfare benefits!

Senate Republicans were unable to stop military pension cuts when Senate Democrats blocked a vote on an amendment to prevent the cuts by closing a welfare loophole for illegal immigrants Tuesday evening.

The two-year budget deal brokered by Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, would cut military pensions by $6 billion over ten years, leaving some Senate Republicans scrambling to stop the cuts.

In 2011, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration found that “individuals who are not authorized to work in the United States” and therefore did not have a valid Social Security number were still able to obtain billions in Additional Child Tax Credits by filing returns with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.

Specifically the Internal Revenue Service watchdog found that unauthorized individuals received $4.2 billion refundable credits in Processing Year 2010.
Tuesday evening, Sessions attempted to force Majority Leader Harry Reid allow amendments the budget agreement.

* * *

Sessions’ motion failed on a 46 – 54 party line vote, with North Carolina Sen. Kay Hagan crossing the aisle as the lone Democrat to vote with the Republicans.
“Reid’s majority just voted to keep pension cut for vets instead of cutting welfare payments to illegal aliens,” a Sessions aide emailed.

In other words, illegal aliens illegally receiving benefits that they are not entitled to under the law will not have to sacrifice either – only our veterans.

Time to vote out every single one of those 58 Democrats at the first opportunity. After all, they refuse to put patriots ahead of border jumpers and themselves.

And lest anyone think I’m letting the GOP off the hook – I think Erick Erickson has it exactly right when he puts an equal share of the blame on Paul Ryan, John Boehner, and the House Republicans who rushed this flawed budget deal through before the American people had a chance to weigh in on it and let those who are supposed to be their representatives know what they thought about it.
