McDaniel And Supporters Adopt Sore Loser Strategy

I would have liked Chris McDaniel to have won last night in Mississippi. He didn't -- and the response of McDaniel and his more passionate supporters has shown me that we are likely better off that he didn't win.

State Sen. Chris McDaniel will challenge the results of the Tuesday runoff election where 41-year incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran won by about 6,400 votes, he announced to a room of supporters here at his victory party at the Hattiesburg Convention Center late Tuesday evening.

“I want to be very, very clear: There is nothing dangerous or extreme about wanting to balance a budget,” McDaniel said in a fiery speech to supporters. There is nothing dangerous or extreme about defending the Constitution or the civil liberties therein. There is nothing strange at all about standing as people of faith for a country that we built, that we believe in. But there is something a bit strange, there is something a bit unusual, about a Republican primary that’s decided by liberal Democrats.”

The more I look at the comments on Twitter and Facebook, the more I see complaints about the open primary system and the fact that there were crossover voters -- in particular, black crossover voters. This upsets me for a number of reasons.

  1. Everybody knew the rules of the game going into the primary and the runoff. Cochran and his team worked within those rules to appeal to eligible voters (those who had not voted in the Democrat Primary on June 3) while McDaniel either did not do so or failed in his efforts. That constitutes being out-played, not being cheated.
  2. Too many of the objections come down to Cochran's outreach in the black community -- and amounts to an implicitly racist argument that blacks are not welcome in the GOP. Setting aside the fact that the "white primary" was Democrat invention that was struck down three quarters of a century ago, REAL Republicans and REAL conservatives reject racism and welcome individuals of all racial and ethnic groups.
  3. McDaniel claimed to be a "Tea Party" candidate. As I recall, the Tea Party claims to be non-partisan and made up of members of all parties. It appears that McDaniel is rejecting a fundamental element of what the Tea Party was all about.
  4. We on the right have never had a problem with crossover voting when it is designed to help our candidates. Anyone remember "Operation Chaos"?

Please understand -- I'm not a fan of open primaries. I'd like to see every primary in every state closed. But you work with what the laws of your state establishes, consistent with the requirements of the Constitution. And so I congratulate Thad Cochran and urge my fellow conservatives to get behind his candidacy -- unless they want to ensure continued Democrat control of the Senate and the Obama abuses of power that such control enables.
