NFL Facing A Host Of Ugly Issues -- Will Ray Rice Precedent Be Applied?

Ray Rice is suspended indefinitely -- and the repercussions of that for the NFL are yet to be determined as an investigation of the league's investigation of Rice gets underway. However, there exist some additional issues on the domestic violence front -- and two new situations to boot.

First the domestic violence cases.

Carolina Panthers Pro Bowl defensive end Greg Hardy has been convicted on two counts of domestic violence and is still playing. Ray McDonald of the San Francisco 49ers also remains active while he is being investigated for abuse allegations.

The Panthers and 49ers both say they are following the NFLís lead, waiting for the legal process to run its course. Neither team has provided details of its investigations.

The cases have similarities to that of Ray Rice, who was released this week by the Baltimore Ravens and suspended indefinitely by the league after an explicit video surfaced of him hitting his then-fiancee.

Now wait -- Hardy has been convicted by a jury of his peers of a domestic violence, and yet the league has not suspended him and his team continues to play him. While he is welcome to continue to appeal, he has been found guilty in the eyes of the law/ Why is he not guilty in the eyes of the NFL and the Carolina Panthers. McDonald hasn't been found guilty of anything yet -- but should the league and the team wait to act based upon the evidence that is already in the public domain?

Then there are the charges against Adrian Peterson here in the Houston area -- charges of child abuse.

Montgomery County Sheriff Tommy Gage has issued a release saying that a warrant has been issued for the arrest of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson.

Peterson was "true billed" on a charge of injury to a child Friday in Montgomery County, north of Houston.

As of Friday evening, Peterson was not in the custody of Montgomery County Sheriff's officers.

* * *

According to Peterson's lawyer, Rusty Hardin, the indictment is related to an incident in which Peterson allegedly disciplined his child with a "switch."

Friday evening, Hardin released the following statement:

"Adrian Peterson has been informed that he was indicted by a grand jury in Montgomery County, Texas for Injury to a Child. The charged conduct involves using a switch to spank his son. This indictment follows Adrian's full cooperation with authorities who have been looking into this matter. Adrian is a loving father who used his judgment as a parent to discipline his son. He used the same kind of discipline with his child that he experienced as a child growing up in east Texas. Adrian has never hidden from what happened. He has cooperated fully with authorities and voluntarily testified before the grand jury for several hours. Adrian will address the charges with the same respect and responsiveness he has brought to this inquiry from its beginning. It is important to remember that Adrian never intended to harm his son and deeply regrets the unintentional injury."

Now what do you do in that situation? You have an indictment and a concession that something terrible happened -- but no conviction. Peterson is deactivated for the weekend by his team -- but should the league act now? Should the team impose a suspension? Or should they wait?

And then there is this against Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

A former exotic dancer has filed a lawsuit against Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, accusing him of sexual assault.

In the suit filed Monday in Dallas County, Jana Weckerly claims that Jones assaulted her in 2009 and that the Dallas Cowboys knew about and covered up the incident.

Weckerly is seeking "monetary relief of over $1,000,000," according to the suit.
Reaction from the Cowboys was swift.

Levi McCathern, an attorney representing the team, called the allegations "completely false" and "a shakedown."

"The legal complaint is unsupported by facts or evidence of any kind," McCathern said in a written statement. "This is nothing more than an attempt to embarrass and extort Jerry Jones."

Now these charges are civil rather than criminal -- and they are vigorously denied. But the claims include not merely sexual assault, but also the use of team personnel and resource to cover up the alleged offenses. How should the league respond? Should it respond? And if so, when?

I don't pretend to have the answers here -- but there are sure some questions that need asking. And frankly, I don't think Roger Goodell is the guy to be answering them -- he has lost credibility. Time for him to go.

And I know a football fan who is just the person to step in and restore public confidence in the league -- Condoleezza Rice.

Should an employer or some uber organization be allowed/required to fire someone accused or convicted of a crime? That is should justice be meted out by your employer and TMZ or should it be the province of the legal system? An employer is indeed allowed to hire and fire to fit their needs and that would include firing someone whose actions harm their business. So should they be allowed to fire a homosexual activists? And conversely should they be forced to fire anyone accused of domestic violence regardless of guilt?

Should assault or violence of someone be parsed as it is by the domestic violence pimps. Shouldn't an assault be an assault and treated as an assault period? I am in favor of punishing people who use violence and hurt others I am not in favor of carving out special interest groups to receive special treatment under law. Is justice blnd or is it biased.

Should an assault domestic or otherwise be forgiven because of the gender of the assaulter? That is, is it domestic violence if a woman hits her husband/partner? That is if Janay Rice hit Ray rice first as she testified in court was she the domestic violence offender or not? And if she assaulted Ray Rice and he pushed her away or punched her was that domestic violence or self defense?

Which brings me to the last question. If a 100 lb woman assaults a 200 lb man who is in good physical condition should he simply take the beating or can he defend himself. The feminist seem to be dissimilating on this. Are we really trying to say that a woman is so weak, so physically incapable, so needing of someone to protect her that she cannot be held responsible for her act of violence and should be immune from anyone defending themselves from her? Why? I wouldn't hit Ray Rice because I am aware he can whip my butt why should any woman be allowed to hit him and then claim that since he could whip her butt he shouldn't be allowed to defend himself? Wouldn't it make more sense to tell women to not commit domestic violence and if they did to not comlain when the victim defends himself?

Yet, the out-of-the-box White, who may have to start his career as a wide receiver, or the prototypical Brandstater, if put in the right circumstances, have the skills that could make them great values from the time their names are called in draft day.
